Holidays of India

India has a large number of Government Holidays because of the large variety of religions in the country. Most people get along well with each other and respect the right of each to worship in their own way. However the problem comes up from time to time that the multitude of religious holidays causes so much time off from work that it is harmful to the country overall. Some within the government would like to see many of the holidays combined into a few national holidays. Such as Independence Day (August 15), Republic Day (January 26) and Gandhi Jayanti October 2). The problem of course is obvious when you view the chart above. The country has millions of people in so many different religious groups that it is just not possible to eliminate any holiday without destroying the political career of anyone foolhardy enough to suggest eliminating some holidays. For this reason it is likely that when compared with other countries this country will always continue to have a large number of holidays.

Government of India

The Government of India, was in some ways modeled after the British rule of law because of their past experience with the British The government was originally established by the Constitution of India and the capital is New Delhi.

Much like the United States of America the government has three interdependent branches: the executive, the legislative and the judiciary. Everyone who ever wanted to become a citizen of the United States had to learn this fact as part of an exam. The executive branch of the government is headed by the President. The legislative branch is the Parliament and the Judicial branch includes the supreme court.

Languages of India
